Algunas chicas tienen toda la suerte. Pero pocas son tan afortunadas como Carla Bruni. Millonaria desde la cuna –es la heredera del imperio Pirelli–, nativa de Turín pero ciudadana de París desde los años ’70 por razones de seguridad, fue “descubierta�? cuando estudiaba en un colegio suizo y en la primera mitad de los ’90 se convirtió en la cara de Guess y en uno de los rostros más adorados durante la era de las supermodelos. Además, Carla era famosa por su afabilidad y ausencia de divismo, lo que la ubicaba en un lugar de privilegio con respecto a las temperamentales Linda Evangelista o Naomi Campbell. Su belleza lánguida pero contundente –pómulos agudos, cabello oscuro, ojos azules, cierta dureza y piernas infinitas– agració más de doscientas cincuenta portadas y supo manejar el negocio como pocas: para 1998, le agregó a su fortuna de nacimiento 7,5 millones de dólares de su propia cosecha. Ese mismo año, a los 30, se retiró del mundo de la moda.
El futuro de una modelo después de las pasarelas suele ser incierto. Muchas eligen la vida domesticada de un matrimonio con algún millonario, otras persiguen una carrera en el cine o la TV. Pero Carla siempre fue distinta. Pocos lo sabían, pero la suya era una familia de músicos: su madre era concertista de piano, su abuelo compositor de óperas y su padre de música dodecafónica. Ella nunca aprendió a leer partituras, pero sola con su guitarra empezó a escribir sus propias canciones a la luz de sus ídolos: Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg. El resultado fue Quelqu’un m’a dit (Alguien me ha dicho), su disco debut que se editó originalmente en noviembre de 2002 y desde hace un mes tiene edición argentina vía el sello Naïve.
Las canciones de Quelqu’un m’a dit son una verdadera belleza. Acompañada casi siempre sólo con la guitarra –la percusión es mínima, también las cuerdas, y apenas asoma alguna guitarra eléctrica para un pequeño arreglo-, Carla canta sus propias canciones con esa voz de fumadora algo monocorde que es marca registrada de las cantantes de chanson française, pero le agrega intimidad, ironía y esa inquietud que provoca escuchar los susurros de una mujer tan sensual, tan hermosa y tan talentosa. “La mayoría de los discos no son colecciones de canciones, son sólo productos�?, dice. “Y el artista también es un producto. Y estoy acostumbrada a eso, de eso se trata modelar. Por eso compuse mis propias canciones, y controlé todo el proceso de grabación. Claro, no soy Björk. Escribí las canciones que podía escribir. Para mí lo importante era ser honesta, hacer un disco honesto.�?
De boca en boca
Quelqu’ un m’a dit no es sólo un gran disco: también fue un enorme éxito cuando se editó en Europa. Pero conseguir que alguien se lo tomara en serio costó mucho. La compañía envió copias promocionales a la pomposa prensa musical francesa, pero no sólo fue imposible que lo reseñaran: “Los periodistas se reían abiertamente�?, recuerda Carla. “Para ellos era un chiste.�? Entonces la compañía tomó una decisión inteligente: no hacer campaña de difusión en absoluto. En cinco meses, media Europa estaba escuchando el disco de Carla Bruni que era pedido constantemente a las radios; ella no daba entrevistas ni iba a la tele, apenas entregaba fotos promocionales. El disco entró en el Top 20, y ella tocó en Les Bouffes du Nord, el chic teatro parisino cerca de la Gare du Nord. Las cinco noches agotó entradas. Su modesto y despojado debut discográfico vendió un millón de copias en Francia, 300.000 en Alemania, y todo antes de que siquiera fuera editado en el mercado europeo más importante, Gran Bretaña. Jane Birkin la bendijo diciendo: “La voz de Carla me hizo detener el auto cuando la escuché en la radio; rara vez me pasa una cosa así. Es de terciopelo�?. Carla hace un cover de Serge Gainsbourg, el famoso esposo de Birkin, “La Noyeé�?, una de sus canciones menos conocidas. A la Birkin le encantó la elección: “Entonces supe que Carla era una verdadera investigadora. Serge casi nunca la cantó en vivo y sólo aparecía en una película que hizo en Yugoslavia. Pero es tan …y que por esa canción concebimos a Charlotte (Gainsbourg, actriz hija de la pareja)�?. Antes de “La Noyeé�?, Carla hacía otro cover de Gainsbourg, “Sois Belle et Tais-Toi�?. El estribillo dice: “Sé bella y cállate la boca�?. “Para mí –cuenta Carla–, era un resumen de mi vida. Así es la vida de una modelo, y cantar esa canción fue un símbolo. Es tan graciosa, y me permitía actuar como un macho. Es como decir ‘dejame tocar y mirar, pero callate la boca’. Mi marido Raphael es un profesor de filosofía, y habla todo el tiempo sobre Friedrich Nietzsche. A veces lo quiero hacer callar pero no me atrevo, porque ya sé cómo son los hombres: hay que dejarlos hablar. Para mí, esa canción de Serge era todo lo que me animaba a escribir.�?
Las canciones firmadas por Carla tienen claras influencias del folk y la chanson, pero también algo de rock, country, vaudeville y jazz, pero lo más notable es la elegancia de las melodías y la interpretación. En algunas, como “Le Plus Beau Du Quartier�?, se burla del joven más lindo del barrio, con una letra que tiene algo de ironía y, por qué no, de autobiografía. Otras son más románticas (“Raphael�?, “L’amour�?). Carla nunca es obvia, pero tampoco busca deslumbrar con excentricidad impostada. Hace gala de un glamour relajado inimitable. E irresistible.
La vida publica
Pero, como si la vida idílica tuviera un precio, Carla Bruni tuvo varios escándalos que plagaron las páginas de la prensa amarilla, y en ocasiones opacaron su talento como modelo y, ahora, como cantante y compositora. Cuando era muy joven –apenas 22 años– tuvo un muy bizarro romance con el indefinible millonario Donald Trump, que dejó al público por lo menos desconcertado.
Poco después, fue novia de Eric Clapton. Pero el frenesí mediático llegó en sus años de relación con Mick Jagger. Las revistas se dieron un banquete acusándola de ser la responsable de la separación del cantante de los Stone: Jagger abandonó a Jerry Hall veinticuatro horas después del nacimiento de su hija Georgia May para reunirse con Carla en Tailandia; él tenía 48 años y Carla 23. A pesar de las promesas de fidelidad, Jagger siguió viendo a Carla durante los siguientes seis años, y ella cometió el error de decirle a un periodista: “Jerry no tiene clase, y todo su comportamiento demuestra una falta total de elegancia�?.
Pero últimamente la prensa francesa está enloquecida con la vida sentimental de Carla, ya lejana de los escenarios rockeros, y mucho más cercana al mito parisino de apasionada bohemia intelectual. Ese “Raphael�? al que ella le dedica una de las canciones más hermosas de su disco es Raphael Enthoven, profesor de filosofía de 29 años, graduado de la Ecole Normale, celebrado por el ambiente académico como el nuevo Bernard Henri-Lévy (su ex suegro). Atractivo y brillante, forma con Carla la otra gran pareja chic de Francia (junto a la que forman el cantautor Benjamin Biolay y Chiara Mastroiani, actriz hija de Marcello y Catherine Deneuve). El año pasado, la ex esposa de Raphael (hija de Henri-Lévy), Justine, publicó una novela que ficcionalizaba parcialmente su ruptura con el joven prodigio.La heroína, alter ego de Justine, se consume en la autocompasión y dedica muchas páginas a un personaje llamado “Paula la Terminator�?, quien le robó a su esposo y le escribió una canción con su nombre. Además, describe minuciosamente las cirugías estéticas de “Paula�?. Pocos días después, Carla y Raphael posaron juntos para Liberation, en una cruel jugada publicitaria.
Carla Bruni no habla del tema. Apenas ofrece declaraciones sinuosas: “Soy muy consciente de que la vida es corta. Entonces, aunque me equivoque, si tengo que decidir entre seguir mis impulsos o no, siempre actúo. Así, nunca me preguntaré qué hubiera pasado si no me animaba�?. Para este año se espera su segundo disco, que tendrá canciones en inglés, no sólo porque Carla quiere experimentar con otras lenguas (habla francés, italiano e inglés) sino porque es el momento de conquistar los mercados más apetecibles. Y promete no ceder un milímetro de su integridad artística con el cambio. Que así sea.
