Ditjes en datjes in Almaty en Urumqi..
Lang geleden dat ik nog eens wat reiservaringen neerschreef. ’t Moet zijn dat ik er geen neer te schrijven had. En daar is de zeer gevulde maar intussen voorbije zomer in België niet vreemd aan. Maar hier zit ik dan toch uiteindelijk aan het klavier in een letterlijk koele hotelkamer in Urumqi. Urum-quid? Qi! We nemen de atlas, vinden China, en daar helemaal in het noordwesten ligt deze hoofdstad van de gigantische provincie, euh pardon, autonome regio Xinkiang.
Intussen eergisteren al een dag in Almaty, de grootste stad van Kazakhstan vertoefd. Zoals een beetje wielrennen- en epo-kenner weet is niet Almaty maar wel Astana de hoofdstad van Kazakhstan. Een land acht keer de grootte van Frankrijk. Je moet dus geen diamantslijpersoog hebben om bij een eenvoudige oogopslag op de atlas vast te stellen dat dit land pal in Azië ligt. Centraal in Centraal-Azië. Een onmetelijk land maar geen meter kust, en geen centimeter grens met Europa. Maar om een onnaspeurbare reden blijft Kazakhstan ons pesten in zijn hoedanigheid van “Europees” land. Niet alleen in de selectie voor de Europese (sic) voetbalcup (of ligt dat ook een beetje aan ons?). Tevens is Kazakhstan een ernstige kanshebber om volgend jaar voorzitter te worden van de Raad van Europa. Dat lijken we gemakkelijker te accepteren dan de mogelijkheid dat Didier Reynders, tot nader order Belg, premier zou kunnen worden van zijn eigen land… Maar we wijken af.
Terug naar vrijdagochtend. Ik land om 6u plaatselijke tijd met de British Airways vlucht. Jawel, dit keer mocht het in business wegens 10 uur vliegen, met tussenlanding in Yekaterinburg in de Oeral. In de luchthaven zou een chauffeur van onze prospectieve klant me staan opwachten met een naambordje. Quod non. Loop een tiental minuten rond. Een tweetal keer zeg ik mijn naam tegen iemand die mogelijks mijn chauffeur kon zijn. Plots word ik aangesproken door een braaf uitziend vadertje dat me zegt: “Mr. Sanders? Me the driver!”. Vijf minuten later zit ik in zijn wagen, maar ruik meteen onraad… waar was zijn naambord? Mijn twijfel wordt meteen bevestigd wanneer hij mijn firmanaam niet blijkt te kennen. En als hij me eens buiten de luchthavenzone vraagt naar welk hotel ik moet weet ik het wel zeker: ik heb me laten vangen door een piraat. Hij zal me mijn naam horen zeggen hebben in de arrivals en heeft me dan aangesproken. Te laat om uit te stappen, dus maar hopen op een goed gesternte.
Klein bijkomend probleempje: aangezien ik ging opgewacht worden door een chauffeur had ik ook niet echt meer de naam van het hotel zo goed in mijn hoofd. “Intercontinental” dacht ik. Ten onrechte. Enfin die Intercontinental waar Kapitein Haak me afzet (letterlijk en figuurlijk) bestaat, compleet met zijn 5 sterren. 50 Euro, vraagt Flurk, en hij kan me een reçutje geven. Ik sta zwak want mijn valies zit nog in zijn koffer.. ik ontplof een beetje, om 20 seconden later akkoord te gaan met 30 Euro…. Correcte prijs indien in Brussel maar dubbel van wat het hier had mogen zijn… Flurk is zo geslepen om mij het reçutje niet in te vullen maar een blanco reçutje in de handen
te stoppen zodat ik er zogezegd maar hoef in te vullen wat ik wil.
Eenmaal aan de desk blijk ik geen reservatie te hebben. Daar sta ik in Kazakhstan, aan de receptie van een verkeerd hotel om 7 uur ’s ochtends. Moeten er nog bananen zijn?
Reiskoffer opengegooid, laptop op de desk, en wat blijkt… ik ben niet geboekt in de Intercontinental maar in de International.. kleine onzorgvuldigheid. Een half uurtje later plof ik neer in het bed van het veel nederiger Hotel International…
Net in slaap, de telefoon: “Chaai Chans, I’m Tatyana, your translator for the meeting this afternoon (want die zou in’t Russisch zijn)”. En of ik goed was aangekomen. Enfin, ik kan dan toch nog een paar uurtjes pitten, in de namiddag is de meeting best productief, en word ik daarna uitgenodigd in een prachtig restaurant. Mijn tafelgenoten zijn een Rus, een Kazak en een Kirgiziër.
Zaterdag 6 april: ’s ochtends vlucht met China Southern Airlines van Almaty naar Urumqi. Mijn hotel ligt in een nieuw aangelegde uitgestrekte “Special Economic Development and Technology Zone”. Brede lanen, lichte industrie, grote appartementsblokken, alles nieuw. Ik wil geld wisselen in de hotellobby. Maar vreemd genoeg doen ze dat niet in dit hotel. En wegens zaterdagnamiddag zijn alle banken dicht tot maandag. In het stadscentrum zal ik wel probleemloos kunnen wisselen op de zwarte markt, zeggen ze me aan de receptie. De man grabbelt 20 yuan uit de lade om mijn taxi naar het centrum te betalen, ik moet het straks maar teruggeven.
Daar aangekomen word ik inderdaad, nota bene vlak voor de Nationale Bank, aangesproken door een paar kerels die met hun zakken vol biljetten klanten proberen te ronselen. Krijg een redelijk aanvaardbare koers, ze moeten ook leven. Dat was toch van mijn rugzakperiode geleden dat ik nog geld had gewisseld op de zwarte markt.
Ik loop nog wat rond in het drukke centrum van Urumqi: de regering in Beijing heeft het handig aangepakt: ik hoor maar één taal en dat is mandarijns. Voor mij natuurlijk een groot voordeel. Maar toch weer een mooi voorbeeld van de kolonisatie van de verre regio’s door Han-Chinezen: meer culturele eenheidsworst, geld pompen in de economie, en voor de rest niet moeilijk doen. Urumqi is een smeltkroes van ethnische groepen: Uighuren, Hui (moslims), Kazakken, Mongolen, Manchus, Han, maar ze spreken toch maar best allemaal zoveel mogelijk Mandarijns. Ik loop nog wel door een pure moslimwijk met heel wat moskeeën, en neem tegen een uur of zes een taxi terug naar mijn hotel.
Tijd voor het avondeten: ik ben moe en besluit in het hotel te blijven. In het restaurant ben ik …. alleen. Op zes serveuzen, twee koks, een zaalmeester, een caissière, en nog wat keukenpersoneel na. Compleet alleen. Met mijn Knack die ik gelukkig meegenomen had. Ik bestel twee schotels, vis en kip, en graag een fles bier. Koud of warm, vraagt één van de zes. Het is frisjes in de zaal, maar warm bier trekt me nu toch ook niet meteen aan. Koud dan maar. Het lieve kind, of eigenlijk één van haar talrijke collega’s, komt met een 75cl fles die net zo goed vers vanuit een ijsberg had kunnen losgekapt zijn: zo koud dat het pijn doet aan keel en verhemelte.
Terug in mijn kamer wil ik toch de thermostaat wat hoger zetten. Geen thermostaat. Enkel een airco switch die ofwel op een hoge, midden, of lage stand kan blazen. Maar geen temperatuurregeling. Naar de receptie. Euh, o ja, heb ik het koud? 1000 x excuus maar er mag maar warme lucht voorzien worden vanaf 15 oktober. Ze kunnen me wel een extra donsdeken brengen. Ja laat maar komen. In tegenstelling tot de hotels in Beijing of Shanghai is er op TV geen BBC, CNN, of TV5, enkel Chinese kanalen, zo’n 60-tal, waarvan één Engelstalig dat zich vooral toelegt op kooklessen. Al de rest zijn Chinese soaps, opera’s, oude draken, en huis-tuin-en-keuken programma’s..
Wireless internet is er niet, maar zouden we moeilijk doen? Met de hulp van een kabel en een bescheiden bedrag per dag kan ik met mijn laptop op internet. En aan de chat. Dat helpt, want de rest van de avond zit ik met extra gekochte trui en flesje wijn, rechtover gekocht, aan mijn laptop. ’t Is een kleine wereld geworden. In ditzelfde leven liet ik mijn brieven sturen naar Poste-Restante adressen in India waar ik zo om de twee weken een paar brieven kon oppikken.
Rond 22u gaat mijn telefoon: twee giechelende meiden informeren of ik het wel warm genoeg heb. Ze willen daar anders best wat aan doen. Ja de oude tijden zijn terug in China. Of liever, de nieuwe tijden brengen de oude beroepen terug tot leven…
Ik schuif nog even in mijn sletsen en kuier met handen diep in de zakken effe rond in het even kouwelijke supermarktje rechtover … en wat maakt mijn dag goed? In een rek ligt, onder extra reclame het Unilever bouillon concentraat, verpakt in onze plastiek uit Lokeren! Hier in het verste punt van elke zee, the middle of nowhere… Mijn rechtstreekse invloed! Want zonder mij was dit Unilever project nooit gelukt, mag ik wel zeggen. Mijn dag kan niet meer stuk, het mag voor mijn part zelfs plots stukken uit de muren vriezen.
Kijk, ik ga onder de wol zie! Onder mijn twee donsdekens!
