They do make your calves look tight and muscular, but for the most part they appear uncomfortable and ungainly.  It has been asserted that wearing them not only is fashionable, it also makes a woman appear skinnier (because they are taller, vertically, in proportion to their normal width.)They look all pinched up in the toe, they are unsteady, they cost a lot of money, and they make you fall down when drunk.
